Lawyer Explains: K1 fiance visa process for your Colombian Girlfriend or Boyfriend
The K1 Fiance Visa Process for Your Colombian Girlfriend or Boyfriend

Thinking about starting the K1 fiance visa process for your Colombian girlfriend or boyfriend in 2025? In this article, our lawyers will explain the basics of this process. Below is a general overview of the fiancé visa process as it currently stands.

Stage 1: USCIS Stage

The process begins when the U.S. citizen files Form I-129F with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). This is often the longest stage of the process. In this stage, USCIS will review the petition to ensure that:

  • The U.S. petitioner is really a U.S. citizen;

  • The relationship is legitimate and ongoing;

  • Both parties are legally free to marry; and

  • The couple has met in person within the required time frame (with limited exceptions).

USCIS places strong emphasis on evidence demonstrating that the relationship is genuine. Supporting documents such as photographs, travel records, communication logs, and personal affidavits are carefully reviewed.

Stage 2: National Visa Center (NVC) Stage

Once USCIS approves the petition, it is forwarded to the National Visa Center (NVC). The NVC conducts internal checks, and prepares the petition for transfer to the U.S. Embassy in Colombia.

This stage is generally shorter than the USCIS review, but timelines can vary depending on caseloads and administrative procedures.

Stage 3: U.S. Embassy in Bogota Colombia

In the final stage, the case is transferred to the U.S.Consulate at the Embassy in Bogota, Colombia. Your Colombian girlfriend or boyfriend will be required to complete several critical steps, including:

  • Form DS-160: Completing and submitting the online nonimmigrant visa application.

  • Biometrics: Applicants must have their fingerprints and pictures taken.

  • Affidavit of Financial Support: The U.S. citizen will have to prove their ability to support the household.

  • Medical Examination: The applicant must complete a medical examination with a physician approved by the Embassy or Consulate.

  • Consular Interview: This is typically the only interview required in the fiancé visa process. A consular officer will assess the relationship, verify documentation, and determine eligibility for the visa.
