Stages of a Fiancé Visa Application in 2024

Below you will find the stages of a United States fiancé visa application for 2024. This applies specifically to applications for a Colombian fiancé or fiancée, at the United States Embassy in Bogota.


Stage 1

This is typically the longest of the three stages involved in the fiancé or fiancée visa application, during which United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) completes an initial review of the application. While several aspects of the application are reviewed during this stage, the main focus of the reviewing officer is determining whether the relationship is real. 


Stage 2

The National Visa Center (NVC) conducts an internal review.


Stage 3

The case is sent to the United States Embassy in Bogota, Colombia. During this stage of the process, the applicant will need to complete the following procedures:

  • Fill out form DS-160.

  • Have their fingerprints taken. This must be done by the Embassy's Applicant Support Center

  • Complete a medical exam. This must be completed by a provider who is licensed by the Embassy.

  • Attend the consular interview. The consular interview conducted at the end of the process is typically the only point in the procedure at which applicants are interviewed (contrary to the common assumption that multiple interviews usually take place). 

Once the application reaches this third and final stage, the Embassy reviews all of the documentation again to ensure its accuracy.
